Amy May Barnett, 74, of Gallipolis, passed away on Monday, May 29, 2017 at Cabell-Huntington Hospital, Huntington, West Virginia.

She was born March 30, 1943 in Gallipolis, daughter of the late James S. and Eva A. Wright Walker. Amy was married to Arnold Leroy Barnett Jr. on June 13, 1992 and he survives her. She attended Promise Land Church. Amy was a loving mother, wife, sister, grandmother and great grandma.

Surviving are her husband, Arnold Leroy Barnett Jr. of Gallipolis; two daughters, Barbara Ann Siders and Brenda (Greg) Terry, both of Gallipolis; grandchildren, Danielle Cremeans and Pamela Ratliff, both of Bidwell, Regina Myers and Mikel Myers, both of Gallipolis, Bryce Dovenbarger and Kaydee Dovenbarger, both of Bidwell and Holden Myers of Gallipolis; sisters, Alice Redmond of Grove City, Joyce Flowers of Hilliard, Rosemary (Truman) Johnson and Carolyn S. Burgess, both of Gallipolis; brothers, Carrol Jean Walker and David S. Walker, both of Gallipolis; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Amy was preceded in death by brothers, Dale Henry Walker, John Richard Walker, James Walker and George Walker and sisters, twins Peggy Ann and Betty Lou Walker, Little Eva Walker, and Susie Siders.

Services will be 1  p.m., Friday, June 2, 2017 at the Willis Funeral Home with Rev. Truman Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Mound Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 12-1 p.m. prior to the funeral.

Larry W. Eads, 77, of Gallipolis, passed away on Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at Holzer Medical Center.

He was born February 3, 1940 in Gallipolis, son of the late Roy Basil and Louise Burnette Eads. He married Alice Finnicum on August 4, 1962 in Pt. Pleasant, WV and she survives him. Larry retired from Akzo-Noble. He loved hunting, fishing, camping, was a trap shooter and loved the outdoors. He was the past president of The Gun Club, Pt. Pleasant, WV for four years.

Surviving are his wife, Alice Eads of Gallipolis; two sons, Brian Stephen (Jody) Eads of Myrtle Beach, SC and Mark (Ruth) Eads of Gallipolis; four grandchildren, Brian Wayne Eads, Joseph Robert Eads and twins, Elizabeth Rae and Emily Rose Eads; three brothers, Gene (Carol) Eads of Knoxville, TN, Roy A. (Sandra) Eads of Henderson, WV and Charles W. (Bertha) Eads of Gallipolis; two half-sisters, Dinah M. Eads and Patricia Eads; a special friends, John Reynolds, Jim Hatten and Kinzy Smith, who were his trapshooting buddies; several nieces and nephews

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two granddaughters, Brandy Nicole Eads and Dianna Michelle Eads, a grandson, Stephen Michael Eads, a sister, Anita Faye Shaver, grandparents Oddie and Florence Eads and Charles and Eva Burnette.

Graveside service will be 1 p.m., Sunday, June 4, 2017 at Centenary Cemetery with Pastor Mike Finnicum officiating. Willis Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Gerald D. Roush, 80, of Gallipolis, passed away on Monday, June 12, 2017 at his residence.

He was born November 5, 1936 in Henderson, West Virginia, son of the late Austin and Frances Plants Roush. Gerald was married to Rita Meek Roush and she survives him. He was a retired carpenter and member of Carpenters Local 200, Columbus, Ohio.

Surviving are his wife, Rita Roush of Gallipolis; five children, James (Julie) Roush and Gerald “Jerry” (Michelle) Roush, all of Canal Winchester, Kimberly Bouaroy of Columbus, Dakota (Tasha) Roush and Jessica (Allen) Nolan, all of Gallipolis; grandchildren raised in the home, Jax, Devin and Rita; 15 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; brothers, Wayne Roush of Gallipolis and Clarence Roush of Bidwell; sister, Betty Oliver of Xenia.

In addition to his parents, Gerald was preceded in death by a granddaughter Faith Bouaroy, a niece Bonnie Roush, twin brother Earl Roush, brothers Gene Robinson, Virgil Roush, Ralph Roush, Alan Roush, and sisters Barbara Glassburn and Karen Folmer.

Wendell R. Haner, 81

Wendell R. Haner, 81, Gallipolis, passed away at 11:25 a.m. Saturday, June 10, 2017, in the Hospice Suite at the Holzer Medical Center. Born September 6, 1935 in the Swan Creek Community of Gallia County he was the son of the late Russell and Fannie Francis Neal Haner, Sr. Wendell worked for the Martin Ford and Thaler Ford dealerships early in his life as a mechanic, later he went on to work for the Ahern highway construction company and the West Virginia Paving Company. Wendell retired after completion of the West Virginia Turnpike which he worked on for many years. Later in his life, Wendell enjoyed mowing lawns in his spare time and raising a garden every summer. Wendell was one who couldn’t sit still very long and he loved being active. He was a member of the Construction Workers Local #543 out of Huntington, West Virginia.

Wendell is survived by his wife, Lillia Mae Fellure Haner, whom he married, on April 21, 1962 in Gallipolis, his son, Tony (Susan) Haner, his two daughters, Jane Haner of Gallipolis, and Jean (Tim) Bevan, of Crown City, two grandchildren, Mykal (Jenn Ball) Haner and Taylor Bevan, three adopted grandchildren, Adam Conrad, Alisha Conrad Ludwig and Jonathan Conrad. His brothers, Adrian “Buddy” (Gladys) Haner, Kenneth (Marsha) Haner, Robert (Carolyn) Haner, all of Gallipolis, sisters, Mary (Jr.) Lewis, Flatwoods, Kentucky, Josie Mowery, Springfield, Ohio, Harriett Martin, Gallipolis, sisters-in-law, Clara Haner, Hilda Haner and Wyllodine Barker, all of Gallipolis, and numerous nieces and nephews also survive. Wendell also had a great circle of friends.

In addition to his parents, Wendell was preceded in death by brothers, Russell Haner Jr., James “Jim” Haner, Jerry Haner and a sister, Hilda Haner Barcus.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 14, 2017, in the Cremeens-King Funeral Chapel. Pastor Randy Carnes will officiate and interment will follow in the Ridgelawn Cemetery in Mercerville. Active casketbearers are Buddy Haner, Bobby Haner, Mykal Haner, Kenny Haner, Tim Bevan and Jonathan Conrad. Honorary casketbearers are David Mink, John McGuire, Brent Davies, and Don Cox. Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Gloria J. Plese

Gloria J. Plese, 74, of Gallipolis, passed away unexpectedly, on Jun 2, 2017 in the St. Mary’s Medical Center, Huntington, West Virginia. She was born January 10, 1943 in Springfield, Il., and was the daughter of the late John “Jack” and Savannah Osterdock Carpenter.

She graduated from the Lock Port High School, Lock Port, Illinois, in 1961 and the Hocking Technical College, in Logan, Ohio in 1983. After her college graduation she was employed as a Deputy for the Gallia County Sheriff’s Department. She enjoyed swimming and drawing and was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church of Point Pleasant, WV. She loved the Lord and her greatest happiness was her children and grandchildren.

Gloria is survived by: her son, John Plese II, of Montgomery, Illinois; a daughter, Cherie Plese, of Bidwell; a grandson, John “Marty” Plese, III, of Martinsburg, WV.; a granddaughter, Cayla Plese, of Columbus, Ohio; two sisters-in-laws; several nieces, nephews and a host of friends also survive.

In addition to her parents, Gloria was preceded in death by her loving husband, John Plese, an infant daughter, Mandy, and her favored brother, John “Jack” Carpenter II.

Frank H. “Buz” Mills III, 70

Frank H. “Buz” Mills III, 70 of Crown City, Ohio died on Friday, June 16, 2017 at the Emogene Dolan Jones Hospice in Huntington WV.

He was the son of the late Frank H. and Eloise Butler Mills Jr., Buz was married to Barbara Swindler Mills and she survives. He was a 1965 graduate of Gallia Academy High School and had great support from his classmates throughout his illness. He attended Ohio State University until enlisting in the United States Army where he served in Vietnam. He always told his grandsons everything he knew he learned in the Army. He went back to OSU for a short time after his discharge, but returned to work on the family dairy farm in the spring of 1971, where he eventually joined his Dad and brother David in a farm partnership. In the spring of 1994 he accepted a job with the Gallia Soil & Water Conservation District, where he retired in April of 2012 as the office manager. He was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church.

Buz generously volunteered his time to his community serving on the Library Board, the Gallia County Jr. Fair Board, and SWCD board of Supervisors where he served on the State Board; he was a charter member of the C.H. McKenzie Ag. Center serving as the first treasurer and a Farm Bureau member.

Surviving is his wife Barbara Mills of Crown City, daughters Beth (Tim) Brumfield of Gallipolis and Amy Mills of Crown City. Grandsons Jeremy and Joshua Brumfield and Cuyler Mills, Sister Sue Ann Bostic of Gallipolis and a brother David (Lisa) Mills of Crown City, several nieces and nephews and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter Jenna Beth Brumfield and a Brother-in-law Kenny Bostic.

The family will be receiving friends at the Willis Funeral Home on Monday, June 19, 2017 from 4-7 p.m. A private burial will follow at the Swan Creek Cemetery at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers please invest your resources and time in memory of Buz, with your family, friends or your community.

The family would like to thank their wonderful family and friends who went above and beyond in providing us with anything we needed, during all the long hours, days and weeks at the James Cancer Center, St Mary’s medical Center and to the Gallia 911 who helped us in so many ways. Darrell Jenkins, 62, Ashton, West Virginia (formerly of Vinton, Ohio) went to be with his Lord and Savior Friday, June 16, 2017, following an extended illness. Darrell was the son of the late Hazel E. Castle, born May 24, 1955 in Gallipolis, Ohio. He was a member of French City Baptist Church, Gallipolis and United Mine Workers. He was a coal miner for twenty-six years and enjoyed raising and breeding Husky dogs.

Darrell leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife, Teresa Jenkins, whom he married May 17, 2014 in Gallipolis, Ohio as well his stepchildren: Jeanette “Nikki” Brown, Roy Meade, Jr., LaDonna Sue Crittenden, Patricia Louise Meade, Kenna Shea Justice, Aaron Kellen Justice, Christy Imboden, Bobbi Sue Imboden, Robert Imboden and Nathan Slayton; several step-grandchildren; sisters: Jeannie Diane Davis and Delta Louise Brown; aunt, Irma Jean (Fred) Wolfingbarger; nephews and nieces: Stormi Dawn Ward, Grant Evan Brown, Lisa Dawn Waugh, Farrah Lynn Wolfingbarger, Samantha Jo Davis, Ricky Davis and a host of extended family members and friends.

In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his step-father, Felton F. Castle.

Funeral services will be conducted 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 21, 2017 in the French City Baptist Church, 3554 State Route 160, Gallipolis, Ohio with Pastor Mark Williams officiating. In accordance with his wishes, cremation services will follow under the direction of the McCoy-Moore Funeral Home, Wetherholt Chapel, Gallipolis, Ohio. Oliver Whitley Adkins, Ollie, 85

Oliver Whitley Adkins, Ollie, 85, of Gallipolis, Ohio, passed away at his residence on June 17, 2017.

Oliver was born on March 6, 1932, in Wayne County, West Virginia, to the late Emmett Adkins and Sarah Mills Clay. He married Lula Mae “Dudy” Burns on June 15, 1955. She preceded him in death on October 9, 2013. He was also preceded in death by his brother Bernie Adkins, his three children, Randell Scott Adkins, Ronald Allen Adkins, and his daughter Tina Louise Russell.

Oliver is survived by his son-in-law, David Russell. His beloved grandchildren include Elizabeth (Kevin) Upmal, Christopher Adkins, Sarah (Kyle) Deel, Kari Anderson (Dustin Gibbs), Andrea (Jason) Jarvis, and Tyler Adkins (Jeannie Wilson). Great-grandchildren include Jacob and Ethan Shope, Logan, Lane and Lucy Deel, Holden and Hudson Jarvis, Aria Gibbs and special friend Kim Adkins.

Oliver started delivering newspapers when he was 12 years old around Marshall University. He graduated from Wayne County High School in May 1950. He was the first of the Adkins family to graduate high school. Oliver enlisted in the United States Air Force for four years and was stationed mostly in California. After he was honorably discharged in September 1954, Oliver started selling cars and went on to own dealerships in Marietta, Point Pleasant, Gallipolis and McArthur. He was a longtime associate of the Gallipolis Auto Auction.

Oliver was a member of The American Legion Post 0027 of Gallipolis for 35 years. He was also a 55 year life member of The Elks Lodge #107 in Gallipolis. Oliver and Duty were members of the Gallipolis Boat Club since 1963. Oliver was also an honorary member of Alpha Delta Epsilon Fraternity at the University of Rio Grande.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, June 21, 2017, from 4-6 p.m. at Willis Funeral Home. Service will follow the visitation at 6 p.m., with Bob Powell officiating. A private graveside service will be held for the family. Pall bearers will be David Russell, Christopher Adkins, Kyle Deel, Jason Jarvis, Tyler Adkins, Dustin Gibbs, J.D. Taylor, and Frank Doolittle.


Elden Lee ‘Gabby’ Stover, 75

Elden Lee “Gabby” Stover, 75, Vinton, Ohio passed away Sunday, June 18, 2017 at his home. He was born April 24, 1942 in Gallia County to the late Alonzo and Leona Devore Stover.

Elden is survived by daughters, Carol Ann Stover, Gallipolis, Ohio and Margaret (Charles D.) Schoolcraft, Vinton, Ohio and Christine Lynn Stover; five grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and sister, Marilyn Stover Griffith, Bidwell, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by one son, one grandchild, three brothers and three sisters.

Graveside services will be held 2 p.m., Monday, June 26, 2017 at Fairview Cemetery, Bidwell, Ohio.

Keith Alan Carter

Keith Alan Carter, 65, of Patriot, Ohio, passed away June 21, 2017, after a long, courageous battle with cancer.

Keith was born July 4, 1951, in Ironton, Ohio to the late Joseph Daniel Carter and Lucille Harrison Carter. He lived in the shadow of the family-owned Carter’s Grocery of Cadmus, Ohio all his life.

A longtime basketball coach at Southwestern and Kyger Creek High Schools, Keith had graduated from Southwestern High School in 1969, from Rio Grande College in 1974 and from the University of Dayton in 1991. Upon retiring from coaching, Keith served in several capacities of educational administration for the Gallia County Local Schools. He retired from public education in 2008 to pursue his first love, farming, fulltime. A member of Sand Fork Baptist Church, Keith recently attended Cheshire Baptist Church.

Keith is survived by his son, Jay Alan Carter; daughters, Kristy Jo (Robert) Akers, Joy Annette (Mark) Runyon; the mother of his children, Lois Cornell Carter; four grandchildren, Grace Anne Runyon, Matthew Wesley Runyon, Ava Marie Akers, and Bodie Preston Akers; two nephews, Gene (Pauline) Sheets and Lynn (JoAnne) Sheets; great-niece and nephews, Mercedes, Logan, and Carter Sheets; an honorary son, Steve Shaffer; and a special friend, Linda Hall.

In addition to his parents, Keith was preceded in death by his sister, Lois Jean Carter Sheets in 2008 and his brother-in-law, William Paige Sheets in 2007.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 27, 2017, at Willis Funeral Home, with Rev. Phil Taylor and Rev. Jerry Sickles officiating. Visiting hours will be 4-7 p.m. Monday, June 26, 2017. His burial will follow in Salem Cemetery.

Nancy Evelyn Campbell, 92, of Crown City (Mercerville Community), passed away on Friday June 23, 2017, at Genesis Healthcare in Circleville. Born July 13, 1924 in Gallia County, she was the daughter of the late Jasper and Myrta Fowler Sheets.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded by her husband, Garret E. Campbell and by two brothers, Kenneth and Howard Sheets.

Nancy was a homemaker and farmed along with her husband. She was a loyal and faithful member of the Victory Baptist Church for over 50 years. She always enjoyed attending Mercerville High School Alumni banquets. She was a loving Wife, Mother, Grandmother and Friend, and was a tireless hard worker and an inspiration to all who knew her.

Nancy is survived by: a daughter, Elizabeth Ann (Ralph) Fausnaugh of Grove City; a son, David (Lori) Campbell of Kennebuck, ME; three grandchildren, Kevin Fausnaugh, Joan Fausnaugh and Tyler Campbell; a great grandchild, Julie Fausnaugh; and two step great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday June 27, 2017 at the Waugh-Halley-Wood Funeral Home with Pastor Richard Unroe officiating. Burial will follow in the Campbell Family Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 6-8 p.m.

Pallbearers will be: Kevin Fausnaugh, Tyler Campbell, Charlie Brumfield, Jeff Fowler, Bill Unroe, Richard Unroe and Scott Hyden.

Margaret Rebecca Brozak

Margaret Rebecca Brozak, 88, of Gallipolis, passed away on Thursday, June 22, 2017 at her home.

She was born June 6, 1929 in Red Jacket, WV, daughter of the late Paris Dink and Easter Melinda White Gilbert. Margaret was retired from Robbins-Myers.

Margaret Rebecca Brozak, devoted and beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, was a precious treasure to her family, who rose to call her blessed. She was such an inspiration to so many. They often looked up to her because of her amazing strength, determination and faith.

Margaret passionately served throughout her life to the glory of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Margaret was a very active and devoted member of her church, Rodney Pike Church of God. She attended church faithfully. She loved to worship, give testimony, and pray with others during their time of need. She received the Virtuous Woman of the Year Award in 2001.

Margaret leaves behind a wonderful legacy of faithfulness to God and love for life. She was such a beautiful woman, on both the inside and out. She provided many with wonderful, vivid memories that will remain with them forever.

Margaret loved to garden, cook and take care of her family. She cherished the moments when she was able to open her home up to family members, travel and spend time visiting with family and friends. She will be tremendously missed by those who knew and loved her.

Surviving are: her daughters and son, Sandra (Joey) Jean Wills of Cheshire, Sue (Evan) Grim-Langert of Adelphi, Maryland, Brenda Gail Henson of Gallipolis, son, Robert Eugene Grim of Gallipolis; six grandchildren, Pamela (Todd) Casto of Gallipolis, Danielle (Scott) Stonestreet of Oak Hill, WV, Jessica (Tony) Ratliff of Rodney, Suzanne (Mike) Eachus of Gallipolis, Tawyna (Jason) Metzger of Circleville, Drew (Samantha) Henson of Columbus; four great grandchildren, Kierstein Casto of Dublin, Chayse Casto of Columbus, Lauren Eachus of Gallipolis and Josie Metzger of Circleville.

Margaret in addition to her parents, is preceded in death by a son James Ronald Grim, a grandson Robert Adam Grim, husband Andrew J. Brozak, six siblings and a son-in-law Jackie Lee Henson.

Services will be 2 p.m., Sunday, June 25, 2017 at Rodney Pike Church of God with Pastor Ron Bynum officiating. Friends may call from 1-2 p.m. at the Church prior to the funeral. Burial will follow in the Memory Gardens, Athens, Ohio. Willis Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Ruby Jean Marcum, 81, Vinton, Ohio passed away Friday, June 23, 2017 at Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus, Ohio. She was born in Lovely, Kentucky on October 8, 1935 to the late Ermal and Frankie Booth Webb.

Ruby married Billie J. Marcum at Richmond, Indiana on June 2, 1956 and he preceded her in death on December 25, 2012. She was a member of Victory Lighthouse Church, Oak Hill, Ohio.

Ruby is survived by sons, Kevin (Judy) Marcum, Vinton, Ohio and Darrell Marcum, Thurman, Ohio, eight grandchildren: Kara (Todd) Ragan, Bidwell, Ohio, Robin (James) Gruber, Bidwell, Ohio, Erin Marcum, Vinton, Ohio, Christiana (Josh) Long, Pliney, West Virginia, Kevin Williams, Gallipolis, Hana Marcum, Thurman, Brad (Crystal Marcum, Gallipolis, Ohio, and Jennifer Bias, Virginia; 24 great-grandchildren; sister, Phillis (Dave) Schaller, New Salisbury, Indiana; sister-in-law, Helen Webb, Lovely, Kentucky; brothers-in-law, Hollie Marcum, Vinton, Ohio, David (Evonna) Marcum Lake Wales, Florida; and sisters-in-law, Mary Block, Vinton, Ohio, Sarah (Donald) Israel, Vinton, Ohio.

John W. Kennedy, 74

John W. Kennedy, 74, Vinton, Ohio passed away unexpectedly Friday, June 23, 2017 at his home. He was born March 27, 1943 in Morgan Township, Gallia County to the late John and Mary Price Kennedy. John married Rebecca Crump on May 14, 1968 in Parisburg, Virginia and she survives. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed taking his grandchildren fishing. However, the most important thing in John’s life was his family, football, fishing and lifelong friends. He was a veteran of United States Army and served in the Vietnam Conflict.

In addition to his wife Becky, John is survived by his daughters, Tia (Stephen) Gibbs, Loveland, Ohio and Tonya (Romeo, Jr.) Isabelle, Oak Hill, Ohio; grandchildren: Nathan (Samantha) Gibbs, Lawton, Oklahoma, Constance (Chad) Rakestraw, Temple, Texas, Romeo “Meo’ Isabelle III, Oak Hill, Ohio, and Aidan Isabelle, Oak Hill, Ohio; great-grandchildren: Ryan Isabelle, Oak Hill, Ohio and one due January 2018; sisters, Carol (Tom) Kessel, Gallipolis, Ohio, Barbara Brown, Columbus, Ohio and brother-in-law, Harold Lee Scott, Circleville, Ohio.
In addition to his parents John was preceded in death by brother, David Kennedy and sister, Patsy Scott.

Billia Louise Jones, 85, passed away Sunday, June 25, 2017 at Pleasant Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Pt. Pleasant, WV.

She was born September 21, 1931 in Clifton, West Virginia, daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Bass Kearns. Billia was married to Stanley Jones and he preceded her in death.

Surviving are her son, Chuck (Gerri) Miller of Pomeroy; two granddaughters; six great grandchildren; four brothers, Harry Kearns of Mason, WV, Thomas “King” Kearns, Danny (Joyce) Kearns, both of Clifton, WV, Kenny (Deloris) Kearns of West Columbia, WV; three sisters, Goldie Kearns of Parkersburg, WV, Marion (Robert) Olinger of Letart, WV, Linda Stewart of Mason, WV; a close cherished friend, Gerald Rought of Pomeroy; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, and husband, Stanley Jones, Billia was preceded in death by a sister Phylis Whittekind, brothers Alfred Kearns and Charles Kearns and two great grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m., Thursday, June 29, 2017 at the Willis Funeral Home with Rev. Brenda Barnhart officiating. Burial will follow in Campaign Cemetery, Gallia County, Ohio. Friends may call from 12-1 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Carolyn Lou Jeffers

Carolyn Lou Jeffers, 84, of Patriot, Ohio was called home June 25, 2017. Carolyn was born November 8, 1932 in Cadmus, Ohio at the home of her late parents, Daniel Wagoner and Mary Slagle Wagoner. She spent most of her life in Gallia County, only a stone’s throw from her childhood home.

Carolyn graduated from Cadmus High School in 1950 and began working as a waitress at the original Bob Evans Steakhouse in Gallipolis, Ohio. She married Lowell Edward Jeffers, her husband of 65 years, on December 26, 1951. The couple raised two children on their family farm where Carolyn was a homemaker. She was also employed as a cook at Southwestern Elementary for several years. She was a member of Sandfork Baptist Church and attended Gallia Baptist Church. Carolyn loved watching and feeding the birds, attending to her flowers, gardening, and reading, as well as playing the piano, guitar and accordion.

In addition to her parents, Carolyn was preceded in death by her two brothers, Vernon Wagoner and Daniel John Wagoner, and two sisters, Rosalie Carter and Marylene Iron.

She is survived by her husband, Lowell Edward Jeffers; two children, Mark Alan (Trena) Jeffers of Bidwell, and Chris Ann (Jamie) Callihan of Patriot; two grandchildren, Lindsey Nicole (Steve) Roderick of Gallipolis, Ethan Reid Tawney of Chicago, Illinois; and a sister, Carma Briggs of Patriot. Also survived by two sisters-in-law, Helen Wagoner and Jenny Wagoner.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, July 1, 2017, at Gallia Baptist Church with Pastor Cline Rawlins officiating. Burial will follow in Gallia Baptist Cemetery. Visiting hours will be 5-8 p.m. Friday, June 30, 2017 at Willis Funeral Home. Pallbearers are Bill Ramsey, Brent Briggs, Jim Jeffers, Ethan Tawney, Jamie Callihan, and Steve Roderick. Derald Brian Sowards, 54, of Vinton, Ohio passed away on Tuesday June 27, 2017 at Holzer Medical Center. Born March 12, 1963 in Gallia County, he was the son of the late George Wills and Jaqueline Stahl Wills, who survives. In addition to his father, he was preceded by two Brothers, Jerry and Ronnie Sowards.

Brian was a truck driver for Pierceton Trucking for many years and was a United States Army Veteran.

He is survived by: his mother, Jaqueline Wills of Gallipolis; his fiancé’, Lisa Nelson of Vinton; children, Sean (Amanda) Sowards of Cincinnati, Brandi (Steven Goodwin) Sowards of Vinton, Patrick Bush of New Jersey, Courtney (Michael) Baird of Southside, WV, Kelsey (Jake Buzzard) Nelson of Mason, Brian Jacob Burris, Justin Burris, and Bradley Burris all of Gallipolis; brothers, Lee Sowards of Charleston, Martin (Amenda) Sowards of Florida, and Jimmy (Natalie) Wright of Mercerville; a Sister, Ramona Litman of Gallipolis; grandchildren, Haylee Nicinsky, Isabella Goodwin, Lincoln Sowards, Devin Bush, Liam Baird, Aiden Baird, Owen Baird, Ava Burris and Steven Goodwin Jr.

Norvin L. (Jack) Carter, 104, of Bellville, Ohio, formerly of Gallipolis, passed away on July 1, 2017. He was born in Crown City, Ohio, on November 8, 1912, to Joseph F. and Nellie G. (Dailey) Carter. Jack graduated in 1932 from Mercerville High School.

On December 18, 1937, Jack married Parney Kathryn Gothard. Jack and Kathryn celebrated 55 years of love, marriage, and devotion before Kathryn’s death on July 13, 1992. On April 25, 1998, Jack married Gladys Swain Moore. Jack and Gladys were blessed with 12 years of marriage before Gladys passed away on May 26, 2010.

Jack is survived by: his only child, Charles J. ( Marlene) Carter of Bellville, Ohio; grandsons Mike (Jill) Lifer, of Jeromesville, Ohio, Jay (Lisa) Carter, Holly, of Michigan, Chad (Carrie) Lifer of Lebanon, Ohio, Joel (Jen) Carter, Orlando, Florida; six great grandchildren, Sarah Lifer, Jarrod Lifer, Zack Carter, Paige Carter, Sadie Lifer, and Brooklynn Lifer; step-daughters Barb (Bob) Maier, Parker, Colorado, and Judy (Sandy) Hunter, Loveland, Colorado. He also leaves two nieces, Neva Gill and Dottie Carter, and many cherished friends.

On April 30, 1942, Jack entered the U.S. Army. Following an honorable discharge from the Army, Jack started his career with Buckeye Rural Electric Cooperative in 1946. He retired from Buckeye after 29 years of dedicated service.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, and his brothers, Norris (Marguerite), and Newell (Floy).

Jack was a lifelong member of the Gallipolis First Baptist Church.

Visitation will be Wednesday, July 5, 2017, at 12-2 p.m. at the Willis Funeral Home in Gallipolis with Jack’s celebration of life beginning at 2 p.m. officiated by Pastor Aaron Young. Interment will follow immediately at Ridgelawn Cemetery.

Jack was a cancer survivor of 42 years. If so desired, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society for Research.

Marianna “Mary” Campbell Stowers, 80, loving wife and kind soul, went to be our angel in heaven Sunday, June 25, 2017. Born in Wilkesville, Ohio September 8, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Warren and Thelma Campbell who devoted her 42 year working career to the Holzer Medical Center and physicians, managing physician’s offices, clinics, etc. as clerical support.

Mary is survived by: her husband of 29 years, Edward Stowers of Bidwell, Ohio; children, Teresa (Mike) Funk of London, Ohio, Michael Stowers of Bidwell, Ohio, Kelly (Barry) Peters of Georgetown, Indiana; grandchildren, Chelsea (Wade) Caldwell, Chris Peters, Kyle Peters; and great-grandson, Brant Cremeans along with soon to arrive, Gabe Caldwell. Also surviving are brothers, Charles (Dorothy “Dot”) Campbell, Jerry (Dianne ”Sue”) Campbell and many nieces, nephews and extended family.

Funeral services will be conducted 10 a.m. Friday, July 7, 2017 in the McCoy-Moore Funeral Home, Vinton Chapel, with Rev. John Jackson officiating. Entombment services will be conducted at 2:00 PM Friday at the Forest Memorial Park, Milton, West Virginia. Friends and family may call at the funeral home Thursday 5-7 p.m.

Roger Louis James, 82, Gallipolis, Ohio passed away Monday, July 3, 2017 at his home. He was born August 28, 1934 at Eureka, Ohio, son of the late Rush F. and Martha Mae (McLaughlin) James. Roger married Rosa Belle Layne James, who survives. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran serving during the Korean Conflict. His memberships include: Gallipolis American Legion Post 27; Gallipolis VFW Post 4464; Gallipolis Morning Dawn F & AM; U. S. Army Corp of Engineers for 37 years and he retired as a Lock Master of the Gallipolis Locks and Dam. He attended the Eureka United Methodist Church.

Survived by his wife, he leaves behind as well to cherish his memory his children: Beverly Sue (James) Knight, Crown City, Ohio; Cheryl Lynn (Mark) Lynch, Point Pleasant, West Virginia and Randall F. (Rita) James, Gallipolis, Ohio; seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; brothers: Richard (Mary) James and Russell James, both of Gallipolis, Ohio and sister: Virginia (Bill) McKinney, Gallipolis, Ohio; brother-in-law, Dan Lewis, Gallipolis, Ohio and several nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Gregory Lee James as well as a sister, Mary Lewis and sister-in-law, Virginia James.

In accordance with his wishes, there are no services. Cremation is under the direction of the McCoy-Moore Funeral Home, Wetherholt Chapel, Gallipolis, Ohio, who is honored to serve the James Family.
