Range Of CandlesRobert Keith Cox, 43, of River Oaks, Texas, passed away on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at his residence.

He was born July 10, 1971 in Gallipolis, son of the late Curtis L. Cox and Glenna Phillips Cox, who survives him. He was an electrician and a member of the electrician’s union.

He was also in the U.S. Marines.

Surviving are his mother, Glenna Cox of Racine, Ohio; two brothers, Tony (Angi) Cox of Pikeville, KY and Paul Gibbs of Pomeroy; three sisters, Jeannie (Carl) Simpkins of Racine, Paula (Truit) Bell of Syracuse, and Darla (Mark) Morrow of Butler, Kentucky; his girlfriend, Virginia Hathaway of Texas; additional survivors include the Paxton Family.

Services will be 1:00 p.m., Saturday, January 31, 2015 at Willis Funeral Home with Pastor Dennis Moore officiating. Burial will follow in Centenary Cemetery. Friends may call from 12:00 -1:00 prior to the service.

She was born July 19, 1955 in Syracuse, Ohio, daughter of the late James Hudson and Clarabell White Landers. She was a homemaker.

Surviving are her companion, Gerald Conkle of Gallipolis; a daughter, Jamye Hoffman of Columbus; one granddaughter, Jade Hoffman; one grandson, Chikotay Hoffman; three sisters, Linda Beaver of Columbus, Anetta Nitz of Pomeroy and Suzanna Stewart of Texas; five brothers, Charles Landers of West Virginia, Mike Hudson and Tony Hudson, both of Pomeroy, Jim Hudson of Middleport, Raymond Landers of Parkersburg, West Virginia; special niece, Sally (Francisco) Landeros of Columbus; and one nephew, Michael Hudson of Columbus.

In addition to her parents, Trina was preceded in death by a son, John W. Hess III and a brother Lonny Hudson.

Virginia GibsonVirginia Cook Webb Gibson, 91, Gallipolis, passed away peacefully in her sleep early Sunday, February 1, 2015, in her Clay Township home. Born July 16, 1923 in Huntington, West Virginia she was the third child of the late John and Mamie Walker Cook. She lived the majority of her life in Mason County, WV and Gallia County, OH .She was homemaker and was a member of the Chesapeake church (lower case “c”) of Christ. Surviving is her husband of 66 years, Roy E. Gibson, whom she married June 12, 1948 in Ashland, Kentucky, one daughter, Cathy (Bob) McCulty, Gallipolis, three sons, Charles Webb and David (Tracy) Gibson, both of Gallipolis, Steven Gibson, Columbus, OH, brothers, Cecil Cook, Gallipolis and Larry Cook, Gallipolis Ferry, WV, sisters, Mary Belle Pasquale and Doris Henry, both of Gallipolis, Ruth Northup, Gallipolis Ferry, Margaret Faye Pierce, Elida, Ohio and Lucy (Mike) Mitchell, Belleville, Indiana, sisters-in-law, Viola Adkins, Ona, WV and Lareda Tennison, Orland Park, Illinois, brothers-in-law, Alvin Gibson, Ona, WV and Ezra Gibson, Killeen, Texas, four grandchildren, Sergeant First Class Scott (Millie) Gibson, of Fort Riley, Kansas and currently serving in Kuwait, Chief Warrant Officer Michael (Brandi) Gibson, Wiesbaden, Germany. Elizabeth (D.R.) Keeton, Vinton and Andrea (Jake) Gannaway, Bidwell, five great-grandchildren, Jesse and Emmalee Gibson, Robbie and Dalton Keeton and Ethan Gannaway and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her first husband, Emmitt Webb, who died in May of 1944 during WWII in Italy, brothers, Charles Cook, Dale Cook, Walter Cook and John Cook Jr., and sisters, Eleanor Cook and Donna Sheline.

Virginia loved her family and friends and enjoyed working in the garden, canning, cooking and baking and going to the flea market but most of all she loved being a Christian.

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, February 6, 2015, in the Cremeens Funeral Chapel. Officiating will be Evangelist Mike Mitchell. Interment will be in the Mound Hill Cemetery. Range Of CandlesRichard E. Elliott, 74, of Bidwell, went to be with the Lord on Monday, February 9, 2015 at Overbrook Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Middleport, Ohio.

He was born September 17, 1940 in Gallipolis, son of the late Morris G. and Pearl Massie Elliott. Richard married Joanne Wiggins Elliott on October 14, 1961 and she survives him. He was an applicance repairman for Elliott Applicance and a retired truck driver for R&L Trucking. Richard was a U.S. Army veteran, a member of Gallipolis First Church of the Nazarene and a member of Gideons International.

Surviving are his wife, Joanne Elliott of Bidwell; three daughters, Dawn Elliott of Barboursville, WV, Vicki (Ray) Bowman of West Chester, Ohio, and Jodi (Jim) Coleman of Bidwell; a son, Rick (Becky) Elliott of Millersburg, Ohio; 10 grandchildren, Katie Chapman, Matthew Bowman, Adam Bowman, Hannah Bowman, Brayden Coleman, Abby Coleman, Grace Coleman, Lisa Elliott, Ben Elliott, Nathan Elliott; two sisters, Eleanor (Harold) Trout of Pataskala, Ohio and Lynn (Don) Mega of Barboursville, WV; two brothers, Jim (Karen Eachus) Elliott of Jackson, Ohio and Larry Elliott of Gallipolis, Ohio.

Services will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 13, 2015 at Gallipolis First Church of the Nazarene with Pastor Eugene Harmon officiating. Burial will follow in Ohio Valley Memory Gardens. Friends may call at the church on Thursday, February 12, 2015 from 6-8:00 p.m. There will be a flag presentation at the graveside by area veteran’s lodges.

Range Of CandlesRichard A. Mount, 79, Bidwell, Ohio, passed away on February 10, 2015, at St. Mary’s Medical Center after a very long battle. He was surrounded with many loved ones. He was born July 1, 1935, in Lesage, West Virginia, son of the late Clyde and Eulah Mount. Richard worked in Capelie’s flowers where he met his wife Avenell. He is a Veteran of the United States Navy, a longtime farmer, logger and construction worker. Until his death he enjoyed working in his garden, raising his animals, taking care of his yard and working in a wood shop with his brother Norman, making various things for the family. He was a man who lived life his way. He was a great brother, husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Avenell Reynolds whom he married April 19, 1963; four children, Donnie (Tami) Mount, Debbie (Bill) Shephard, Michelle (Steve) Baldridge, and Rick (Lisa) Mount; eight grandchildren, Misty and Nicole Mount, J.C. (Jennings) and Mindena Gillenwater, Brian and Dustin Baldridge, and Brittany and Adam Mount, ten great-grandchildren, Trinity and Zane Frye, Adrian Neel, Hudson and Carmen Gillenwater, Trace Russell, Zach Henry, Ciara Hurt, Lily and Zoe Mount and one great-grand baby on the way, two brothers, Norman (Shirley) Mount, and Lester (Freda) Mount; two sisters, Anna (Jim) Mitchell, and Joyce (Darrell) Livingston. There are many nieces, nephews, family and friends who will miss him. He will forever be in our hearts and memories.

Funeral Services will be held Friday, February 13, 2015, at 2:00 P.M. at the McCoy-Moore Funeral Home, Vinton with Pastor John Swanson officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home Friday, 12:00 P.M. until time of service. Cremation will follow the service.

Range Of CandlesWillard Copley, 83, of Debary, Florida, passed away on Monday, February 9, 2015 at his residence.

He was born July 9, 1931 in Prenter, WV (Boone County), son of the late R.A. and Matilda Wallace Copley. He was married to Betty L. Swain on April 4, 1953 in Jackson, Ohio. Willard was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War. He was a graduate of Rio Grande High School, the University of Rio Grande, received his master’s degree from Marshall University and did post graduate work at Ohio University.

Willard taught at Vinton Elementary, Rio Grande High School, former Superintendent of the North Gallia District, Assistant Principal at Jackson High School, Guidance Director of Jackson City Schools, and a Field Supervisor of Student Teachers at the University of Rio Grande. He was a 50+ year member and Past Master of Centerville Lodge 371 Thurman, Past District Education Officer and Past District Deputy Grand Master of 12th Masonic District, life member of the Ohio Education Association and the Ohio Retired Teacher Association, life member of VFW, Salt Springs, Florida, former teacher and Sunday School Superintendent of Simpson Chapel United Methodist Church in Rio Grande. He enjoyed golfing and fishing.

Surviving are his wife, Betty L. Copley of Debary, Florida; two daughters, Susan (James) Musgrove and Lori (Michael) Brannan, both of Debary, Florida; grandson, Ryan (Cassie) Elliott of Gallipolis and granddaughter, Jillian (Travis) Souders of Lancaster, Ohio; three great grandchildren, Todd and Brianna Elliott and Trent Souders; two brothers, Morgan (Norma) Copley of Pickerington, Ohio and Robert (Ruth) Copley of Thurman, Ohio; two sisters, Mary (Jim) Webb of Smithville, Tennessee and Judy (Fred) Rullman of Thurman, Ohio.

In addition to his parents, Willard was preceded in death by two brothers, James Copley and Eugene Copley.

Services will be 1:00 p.m., Saturday, February 14, 2015 at the Willis Funeral Home with Bob Powell officiating. Burial will follow in Ohio Valley Memory Gardens. Range Of CandlesJulie A. (Blain) Webb, died peacefully with her husband by her side, Tuesday evening, February 10, 2015 in Aultman Hospital, Canton, after a brief illness.

Julie was born March 19, 1946 in Point Pleasant, West Virginia to Lee Otis and Charlotte Pearson Blain. She graduated from Point Pleasant High School in the class of 1964 and attended Rio Grande College, majoring in speech and drama. She married William (Bill) Webb November 11, 1966.

Julie is survived by her husband, William (Bill) Webb; a daughter, Dr. Lee Jarrod Webb and a son, William Shannon (Margi) Webb; two granddaughters, Abby and Ashton Webb and her mother, Charlotte Blain. She was preceded in death by her father and a brother, John Allen Blain.

Julie was well known in the tri-county area. She taught for a brief period in Mason County, West Virginia at Wood’s Elementary, worked for the Gallia County Board of Mental Retardation, and was instrumental in starting the school for the mentally retarded in Meig’s County. She was known as an accomplished crafter and painter for years, traveling to numerous shows including the Bob Evans Farm Festival. Julie was a successful business person as owner and operator of The Groom and Supply Shop for a long period of time and owner and operator of Aunt Clara’s Collection. She graduated from Hondros College with a degree in real estate and was a successful realtor in both Gallia and Holmes County. Recently, she worked part time for Digital Dish as an employment screener.

She was a member of The Ohio Board of Realtors, served as Democrat Central Committee Person for several years, and was an outspoken supporter of equal rights for all and human rights in general. She will be sadly missed by her husband and friends.

Services will be 2:00 p.m., Sunday, February 15, 2015 at the Willis Funeral Home with the Reverend Katharin Foster officiating. Burial will follow in Centenary Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday, February 14, 2015 from 6-8:00 p.m.

Robert Hammond 001Robert Hammond, age 69, of Miller, Ohio went to be with the Lord on Thursday February 12, 2015 with his wife and family at his side. Robert was born November 3, 1945 in Robinette, West Virginia. He was the son of the late James Albert and Lois Virginia Gamble Hammond. In addition to his parents, he was preceded by a twin brother, Raymond and brothers, Donald Ray Hammond and James A. Hammond Jr. also two sisters, Charlotte Sanders, and Anna L. Nuckles.
Robert is survived by his wife, Loretta Montgomery Hammond of Miller, six children, Robin Sue Hammond of Aguanga, CA., Christy (Doug) Campbell of Temecula, CA., Tracy Radford of Rancho Cucamonga, CA., Cheryl (Jim) Wilson of Lavelette, WV., Rebecca Medina of Farmington, NM., and Wayne (Shellie) Shenefield of Farmington, NM. Four sisters, Betty Long of Gallipolis, Maxine Hammond of Carlisle, KY., Linda (George) Owens of Laurens, and Judy (Darrell) Haney of Bidwell. One brother, David Hammond of Bidwell. Robert was blessed with 14 grandchildren and 13 special great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 1:00 PM. Monday February 16, 2015 at the Waugh-Halley-Wood Funeral Home with Pastor Meredith Turley officiating. Burial will follow at Ohio Valley Memory Gardens. Range Of CandlesGeorge Ralph Sheets, age 90, of Gallipolis, died Friday February 13, 2015 at Holzer Medical Center. Born August 23, 1924 in Gallipolis. He was the son of the late George Riley and Rita Maude Wallace Sheets. In addition to his parents, he was preceded by, 1 son, John Stephen Sheets, by 4 brothers, Ezra, Lasco, Harry and Roy Sheets, by a sister, Mable Cline, by a half-brother, Clarence Sheets, and by two half-sisters, Julia Garlic and Minnie Thornton.
George retired after 28 years of service from Kaiser Aluminum Corp. He was a World War II Army Veteran, serving as a gunner on a halftrack. He served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater and the American Theater.

He is survived by his wife Frances Harrison Sheets of Gallipolis, son, Monte (Diane) Sheets of Leo, Indiana, daughter, Amber (Tim) Clary of Crown City, 8 grandchildren, and several great grandchildren. Also surviving is one sister, Charlotte Belchar of Delaware Co.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM. Tuesday February 17, 2015 at the Waugh-Halley-Wood Funeral Home with Pastor Monte Sheets officiating. Burial will follow in Ridgelawn Cemetery. He was born on June 28, 1975 in Gallipolis, son of the late David L. Raynor and Barbara Ashworth Raynor who survives in Gallipolis. David is also survived by his fiancé Christina Ellis of Gallipolis, children, Cameron Raynor, Sophia Raynor, and Victor Grimes, Sisters Tracy (Colin) Saunders, Lee Ann (Jeff Smith) Raynor both of Gallipolis, his twin sister Heather (Jacob) Hall of Bidwell, nieces and nephews Ashley Brumfield, Zachery Brumfield, Caytlyn Hall, Andrew Hall, Izabella Hall, and Lillian Hall, and Gabriel Raynor, great niece and nephew Jada Brumfield and Danny Brumfield, grandmother Eloise Collins of Proctorville. He was preceded in death by his dad, a sister Shannon L. Raynor and a brother-in-law Danny Brumfield.

David enjoyed farming and was a member of First Baptist Church.

Born April 20, 1927 in Gallipolis, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Haskell Wells and Belva Stevers Wells. In addition to her parents she was preceded by one Brother; Paul Wells, and by one Sister; Ruth Roberts.

Glenna was a self-employed Cosmetologist for fifty years. She attended the Rodney Church of Light.

She is survived by her Husband; Glenn C. Roberts of Gallipolis; one Son; Chad (Mayory) Roberts of Gallipolis; two Grandchildren; Tyler Roberts of Georgia and Jose Roberts of Akron, Ohio; and by one Brother; Kenneth (Della) Wells of Chillicothe.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday February 28, 2015 at the Waugh-Halley-Wood Funeral Home, with Pastor Dan Lamphier officiating. Burial will follow in the Centenary Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday February 27, 2015 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

MelMelvin Lee Craft, 78, Gallipolis, passed away at 10:05 P.M. Tuesday, February 24, 2015, at his Clay Township home. Born March 5, 1936 in Clay Township he was the son of the late Hobart M. and Clara A. Helmintoller Craft. Melvin retired as a casting foremen from the Kaiser Aluminum Corporation Ravenswood’s works after 26 years of service. After retirement he was an over-the-road trucker driver for a few years. Melvin was a 1954 graduate of the Gallia Academy High School and greatly enjoyed being a member of the Class of ’54 Alumni Committee. Melvin was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a member of both the Morning Dawn Lodge #7 and Patriot Lodge #469 of Free and Accepted Masons of Ohio. He was a 54 year member of Morning Dawn Lodge and just recently received his 50 year pin from the Patriot lodge. Melvin served as Worshipful Master of Morning Dawn Lodge in 1969, 2002 and 2003 and he was the only Master to have served Morning Dawn for three tenures since 1883. Melvin was also a member of the Lafayette Shrine No. 44 of The Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem, Aladdin Temple Shrine where he was a member of the Past Masters Unit, Gallipolis Shrine Club, Chairman of the Gallipolis Shrine Club Roadrunner’s Unit and District Captain of the Shriner’s Roadrunner Unit, providing transportation of children to the Shriner Hospitals in Cincinnati, Ohio, Lexington, Kentucky and Erie, Pennsylvania, he was a 32 degree Master Mason of the Ancient Accept Scottish Rite of the Valley of Columbus and a charter member of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of the Valley of Gallipolis, a member of Hillbilly Clan #7 and Horse Traders, Gallipolis Chapter #79 of The Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons, The Rose Commandry #43 of the Knights Templar, Moriah Council #32 of the Grand Council of Royal and Select Masons of Ohio. Melvin was the recipient of the 12th Masonic District’s Meritorious Service Award and had also received the Mandarin Degree from the Toronto, Canada Shrine Club. He was also a Kentucky Colonel, a member of Ohio Eastern Star, Gallipolis Chapter #283, Sons of the Confederacy and the Gallia Academy Alumni Association.

Melvin is survived by his wife,  Donna M. Peters Craft, whom he married October 15, 1969 in Huntington, West Virginia, children, J.D. (Roni) Craft, Lancaster, Ohio. Melvin’s grandsons will serve as Casketbearers. The 1954 Class of Gallia Academy will sit together at the funeral service in their honor of Melvin. Range Of CandlesInez M. Haislop, 88, of Gallipolis, passed away on Thursday, February 26, 2015 at the Arbors at Gallipolis.

She was born on October 25, 1926 in Kanawha County, West Virginia, daughter of the late John D. and Artha M. Carr Hornsby. She was a member of the Chapel Hill Church of Christ, a homemaker, waitress, foster grandparent and baby-sitter.

She was married to Robert L. Haislop and he preceded her in death in 1970, also preceding in death was a son Paul L. Haislop, three sisters Eunice Alderson, Geraldine Osborne, and Ethel Hornsby, and by one brother John W. Hornby.

Inez is survived by four daughters Cassandra Byer, Ann (Gene) Elliott, both of Gallipolis, Ruth (Robert) Ervin and Beverly Bush, both of Jackson, Ohio and by two sons James W. (Carolyn) Haislop of Bidwell, and Robert Lee (Sheila) Haislop of Oak Hill, Ohio. 24 grandchildren, 66 great grandchildren, and 20 great great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 2 pm Sunday, March 1, 2015 at Chapel Hill Church of Christ with Minister Jonathan McNulty officiating. Burial will be in Ohio Valley Memory Gardens. SlaytonAnn Hayes Slayton, 92, formerly of Vinton, Ohio, went to be with the Lord in Heartland of Jackson, Jackson, Ohio, Saturday, March 7, 2015. She was born April 7, 1922, at Brooklyn, New York, daughter of the late Otto Bergmann and Augusta Muller Bergmann.

Ann was preceded in death by her husbands, Paul Hayes Sr. and Russell Slayton; one grandson, Jeremy Hayes and one sister, Doris Donigan. She was a loving and devoted mother and she was a member of the Fellowship Chapel, Vinton, Ohio; The Vinton Garden Club and a life member of the Jackson (Ohio) VFW Ladies Auxiliary.

Surviving are her three sons and their families: Paul (Tanya) Hayes Jr. of Grove City, Ohio and his children: Lisa, of Groveport, Ohio, Tracey, of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, Josh Hayes, Madison Hayes and Alyssa Hayes of Grove City, Ohio; George (Lora) Hayes of Athens, Ohio, and his children: Paige Hayes, of South Dakota and Peyton Hayes of Athens, Ohio; and Russell Slayton Jr. of Jackson, Ohio and his son Bradley Slayton of Darwin, Ohio. Also surviving are six great-grandchildren: Ben, Tyler, Ellie, Ziara, Reis and Bodara. She was a god-mother to her nieces Delores Donigan and Janice Anderson.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Thursday, March 12, 2015, at the McCoy-Moore Funeral Home, Vinton, Ohio with Pastor Dale Geiser officiating. Burial will follow in the Ohio Valley Memory Gardens, Gallipolis, Ohio.

He was born on January 27, 1948 in Spencer, West Virginia, son of the late Dennie C. and Gertrude E. Rhodes Thomas. John was retired from GKN where he was employed for 38 years. He loved hunting and fishing and spending time with his family and friends. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother William Thomas, brother-in-law Carl Price and a nephew Ricky Price.

John is survived by his wife Sharon M. Jackson Thomas of Gallipolis, one daughter Annette (Lonnie) Sanders of Gallipolis, a son Randy Thomas of Ripley, West Virginia; two sisters Ruth Ann (Chester) Ray of Ripley, West Virginia and Cathleen Price of Gay, West Virginia; three brothers Charles (Ida) Thomas and Gary Thomas, both of Harmony, West Virginia, and Darrell (Amy) Thomas of Pigeon Roost, West Virginia; four grandchildren Cynthia Nataly, Christina Galvan, Lonnie Dale Sanders II, and Keith Thomas; 3 great grandchildren; special friends Anita Davis, Lloyd and Donna Shaver, and Carl Veith, several nieces and nephews, and his special pet dogs Belle and Benny.

Ethan was a Junior at Buckeye Hills Career Center and River Valley High School. He was a caring and loving boy. He had a love of music as well as his family and friends. Ethan is survived by his mom, Tiffany Culpepper, step-dad, Seth Arrowood, and sister, Hannah Culpepper all of Oak Hill.
