Mary May Hannon passed into the arms of the Heavenly Angels to reunite with her beloved Don on December 19, 2017 at The Oaks at Northpointe Assisted Living in Zanesville, Ohio, after battling dementia for several years.  Mary had a competitive spirit and fought until the very end.  She was 86 years old.  We rejoice in her life and love.

Mary was born in Ironton, Ohio on February 14, 1931, a Valentine Sweetheart to the late Charles William and Dorothy Virginia Flower Walters.  She graduated from Ironton High School, Class of 1949, where she cheered the Tigers onto victory and made many friendships she kept and cherished throughout her life.

Mary married Donald L. Hannon on July 25, 1953 in Ironton, and they celebrated 55 wonderful years together before Don’s passing in 2008.  Don and Mary lived in San Antonio, Texas for 2 years while Don served in the Army.  They then moved back to Ironton for several years, before establishing a home in Gallipolis, where they would raise their 3 children, Joan, Jane and Jim.

After Don’s retirement in 1992, they relocated to Leesburg, Florida where they spent 17 “good” years together in warm and sunny Florida.  It was a dream fulfilled for both.  Upon Don’s passing, Mary moved back to Ohio to be near family, spending the majority of her years in Zanesville, where she was lovingly cared for by her oldest daughter, Joan and her husband, Dr. Carl A. Minning. We are forever grateful for their love, care and support of mom.  In addition, Mary is survived by her daughter, Jane (Jim) Noe of Gallipolis, and her son, James Donald Hannon of Gallipolis.  Grammy’s 8 grandchildren loved and adored her.  They include Dr. Chris (Lindsay Dare) Minning, Abby (Sam) Anderson, Andy (Brynn) Noe, Amy Jane Noe, Tyler Hannon, Rachel (Codie) Ward, Sarah and Kristen Hannon.  Mary had 2 great grandsons, Jack Anderson and Benjamin Noe.

Mary was a member of the First Baptist Church in Ironton, Grace United Methodist Church in Gallipolis and Tavares United Methodist Church in Florida.  Mary was a strong Christian who read her Bible every day, and loved to sing the old traditional hymns.  Some of her favorites were Blessed Assurance, Trust and Obey, Amazing Grace, and Standing on the Promises of God.

In addition to being a homemaker and stay at home mom, Mary managed Don’s podiatry practice in the basement of their home, answering the phone to make appointments and keeping his books.

Mary enjoyed decorating her home for all the holidays, bicycling, laying in the sun, laughing whole heartedly, and having fun.  She had the biggest and most beautiful smile.  She was an excellent cook and made the best chocolate chip cookies, cheese wafers, chex mix and homemade noodles.  She was a passionate and very competitive card and game player, and taught all her grandchildren to play rummy, euchre and casino.  She loved babies, country music, the good ole’ USA, God and her family.

A private family service will be held, with John O’Brien officiating, interment to follow at Mound Hill Cemetery.  Willis Funeral Home is assisting the family.  We would also like to thank the staff at The Oaks who loved Mom dearly and cared for her in her last years.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to North Terrace Church of Christ, 1420 Brandywine Boulevard, Zanesville, OH  43701, which supplied loving messages of hope and spiritual guidance to the residents at The Oaks.
